Baby’s first year is full of developmental milestones.  Your baby is growing stronger each day and is constantly looking for new things to explore.  Swings and bouncers can be used to either soothe or stimulate your little one.  Many come with attached mobiles or toy bars.  When shopping for a swing, consider purchasing one with a variety of sounds, speeds, and recline positions so you get the most for your money.  This way, you can use it for playtime or naptime.  Bouncers, on the other hand, are great because they are much lighter and therefore more portable.  Look for a bouncer that folds for easy storage and transportation.  Here are our top picks:  (Scroll down for jumpers and walkers.)

Jumpers and walkers are primarily used to stimulate baby’s motor skills and hand-eye coordination.  While these toys can help to build leg strength, experts agree that they should be used for only brief periods each day and may actually cause babies to take longer to learn to walk.  Babies need lots of floor play time so they can learn developmentally-appropriate skills such as crawling and pulling themselves up.  Babies that have lots of practice crawling and standing independently learn to walk sooner than babies who primarily use walkers.

If you choose to purchase a walker, make sure you choose one that has brake pads or another form of safety protection, especially if your baby will be using the walker near stairs.  Your safest bet is to purchase a baby safety gate to use at the top of stairs.  Close all doors to rooms you do not want baby to enter, and never leave your baby unattended in a walker.  Walkers should only be used on smooth, even surfaces indoors.  If you are concerned about your baby’s safety in a walker, consider purchasing an alternative walker that allows baby to walk only in a circle (see the Evenflo ExerSaucer below).
